Great for restoration and also
painting replica kits.
See below for a 20 pic step-by-step
painting demo!
These TEMPLATES are for experienced
modelers and an airbrush is highly recommended for best results.
They are a precision clear vinyl made for one time use, but depending on
the modeler these templates can be reused. We are continually adding
more to our list, so always check back to see if your car is available.
The "plan" is to make templates for most all cars offered by RRR as well
as some restoration AFX templates. You can purchase as many as you'd
like and they are only $4 ea.

Have fun!
REMOVE ALL interior sections of
templates and set-aside before attempting to paint.
Save inside parts of template in
case you remove wrong ones.
PRECLEAN body of car VERY well.
If it is a resin RRR resin body soak body in lacquer thinner for 1 minute
and remove. For regular original Aurora bodies use good soap &
water.
"PATIENCE IS THE KEY TO A GOOD
PAINT JOB."
For paint tips, etc. go to myFAQ
Paint page
I removed the interior template
and aligned the back with the small "step" in the body, and the steering
column section. Masking tape is used to control overspray.
I sprayed the interior with high-gloss
black DUPLI-COLOR spray paint put in my airbrush cup.
Remove template. The sooner
the template is removed the better your results will be.
Next, the side template is installed.
There are 2 "L" shaped corners marked on the template for alignment of
template w/wheel openings and bottom of body (arrows). Mask
edges.
Again, Dupli-Color paints are used
to paint sides. Remove template quickly.
Paint both sides.
Apply front nose round template
and mask appropriately.
RRR body molds have such fine resolution
and details that if our fingerprints get onto the mold master we will mold
our fingerprints into every car. So, in many cases, you can actually see
the small height differences in the old paint locations from the original
master if you hold the car in the light at an angle.
Paint white and remove template.
BE SURE PAINTS ARE THOROUGHLY
DRY BEFORE
APPLYING NEXT TEMPLATE!!!
Set driver template- but
DON'T press top templates too hard onto fresh paint underneath.
If templates seem too sticky
and removes the 1st paint,
lessen tack on back by tamping
with fingers.
Paint driver.
Set car aside to thoroughly let
paints dry.
Set and align the side number template
onto car. Paint black.
Set front number template and mask
again.
Paint black.
Set the headlight/front wing template.
Simply align headlight and let
it lightly touch the body.
Don't try to conform the template
to all the rounded contours of the front fender.
Shoot silver paint straight down
from above.
Carefully remove template, not
letting it touch the front wing.
Paint other side the same way.
Apply rear gas cap template and
spray silver.
Install painted driver head (#1320).
Then window glass and a finally
a new chassis (#394).
You're ready to go.
